Who’s the 2017 Artist of the Year 2D Visual Art? Meet Celine Kim – Orange County Register

When Celine Kim graduates from University High this year and moves on to the University of Chicago to study fine arts, she’ll leave behind quite a legacy.

She contributed two large-scale murals on the 55-acre campus in Irvine and is adding her artistic touch to a third.

Last year, she and her teammates made it to the semi-final round in the Vans Custom Culture Shoe Design. Also in 2016, she earned the school’s Award of Excellence in performing and visual arts.

Wait, there’s more: first place in the Californian Korean School Art Contest (2014); third place in the California Duck Stamp Art Contest (2016); the Blue Ribbon in the Orange County Fair’s visual arts competition for youth (2016).

And now, Kim has bragging rights as the Register’s 2017 Artist of the Year in 2D visual art.

Kim’s favorite medium is acrylic, because, she said, she likes to feel in control. But a lot of her work is about not being in control.
