What’s on TV Saturday: Robert De Niro in ‘The Wizard of Lies’ and Dwayne Johnson on ‘Saturday Night Live’

Bernie Madoff gets the HBO treatment in “The Wizard of Lies,” starring Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer. (Compare it to Woody Allen’s fictionalized take in “Blue Jasmine.”) And Dwayne Johnson hosts “Saturday Night Live” for the fifth time.

THE WIZARD OF LIES (2017) 8 p.m. on HBO and all HBO streaming platforms. Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer portray the Wall Street schemer Bernie Madoff and his wife, Ruth, in this adaptation of the 2011 best seller by Diana B. Henriques, a financial reporter for The New York Times. (The book featured Mr. Madoff’s first interviews for publication since his 2008 arrest on charges of securities fraud. The next year, he was sentenced to 150 years in prison.) The film, from Barry Levinson, is “more about who Madoff is than about what he did,” Noel Murray wrote in The Times, and like a Ponzi scheme, it “suffers from some diminishing returns the longer it runs.” But at its peak, “the movie pays off,” he added, noting that “Mr. De Niro gives one of his best screen performances in years” and is well matched by Ms. Pfeiffer.

THE 142ND PREAKNESS STAKES 5 p.m. on NBC. The Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming chases the second leg of the Triple Crown at the Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore.
