Canyon Fire 2 inches toward full containment on Day 4; 241 may reopen – Orange County Register

Slight winds allowed 1,201 firefighters to push down on the Canyon Fire 2 on Orange County’s northeastern edge Thursday, getting containment of the once-raging blaze to 65 percent.

“It was another great day, weather-wise,” said Mike Lyster, spokesman for the city of Anaheim. “We were in a good place this morning. Now, you go to a better place.”

Fire officials had said they hoped to reach full containment Saturday, which would mean firefighters are confident that the blaze would not jump the perimeter at any spot. But in their latest update, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, they set goal back to Tuesday, Oct. 17.

Burned acreage remained the same as 24 hours before: 9,217, when containment was at 60 percent. The number of firefighters was down from about 450, the apparent high mark for the fire that ignited Monday morning.
