WASHINGTON – Airlines matched record-low rates for canceling flights and bumping passengers in November, and reported their second-best punctuality, the Transportation Department announced Friday.
The dozen largest airlines collectively reported landing within 15 minutes of their schedules 88.3% of the time in November, according to figures from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics.
That monthly rate placed second only to the 88.6% on-time arrival rate in November 2009, according to the bureau’s Air Travel Consumer Report.
The rate had been 84.8% in October and 86.5% for the same month a year earlier, according to the report.
The most punctual carriers in November were Delta Air Lines, Spirit and Hawaiian airlines. The carriers with lowest on-time arrival rates were Virgin America, Alaska and SkyWest airlines.
Airlines canceled 0.3% of their domestic flights in November, which matched the record low set in September and November 2016, the report said. Airlines cancelled 0.7% of their flights in October.
The carriers with the fewest cancellations were Delta, which canceled no flights in November; United Airlines, which canceled 18; and American Airlines. The most cancellations were at Virgin, Alaska Airlines and SkyWest.
During August, September and October, airlines bumped 0.15 out of every 10,000 passengers, the lowest rate since record-keeping began in 1995. The rate was down from involuntarily denying boarding to 0.44 out of every 10,000 passengers in the second and from a 0.69 rate in the same quarter a year earlier.
The results came in a lull between a hurricane season that disrupted tens of thousands of flights in September, and winter storms that cancelled thousands of flights in December and January.
